On the north-eastern edge of the flat land of the Noordoostpolder lies an unexpected pearl: the Kuinderbos. With water, a hill, a stronghold and a stream. Also, in the winter you can enjoy lovely, sheltered walks. In the woods there are walking, nature and bicycle trails, a nature campsite, a day campsite, playing fields, picnic spots, campfire areas and historic ruins. There are walking routes, a "wet nose path”, an area where dogs can run loose, an ATB route, the Kuinderbos bicycle route and a bridle path. The woods stretch out over the border with the province of Overijssel. You are then only a few kilometres away from the "Weerribben-Wieden" National Park. This is teaming with special plants, toadstools, butterflies, birds of prey and predators such as the pine marten. Around the Kuinderplas Welsh ponies and Iceland ponies ensure that the open spaces in the woods remain open. The origin of the Kuinderbos is undeniable. Just take a good look at the ground: because the woods were planted on the seabed of the salty Zuider Zee, it is still possible to find the remains of shells between the trees.
