With the vagaries of the tides over the centuries, these former islands would sometimes appear and just as quickly to disappear again. They are now 'securely permanent’ as the sea that once swilled around them has been drained. The water has left its mark though, creating a wealth of historic treasure.

Schokland is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering an exceptional combination of cultural history and nature. It also a symbol for how the Netherlands and the Dutch live with the water.

Urk is a lively and traditional fishing village. A picturesque place where you still get that 'island' feeling when strolling through the meandering passageways of the old centre, and where every house is individual. The surprising vistas, small intimate squares, fascinating signs on the facades and numerous stylised decorations with anchors and ships create their distinct atmosphere.

Nagele, with its flat roofs and regular lines and planes, was built by the 'De Acht' group of architects which included Gerrit Rietveld and Aldo van Eyck; certainly a unique place!
